Summers on the Tuscan Coast

Written by Sara When I visit Follonica, I’m always reminded that some places don’t try to impress you, they simply welcome you. This small Tuscan seaside town is where some of our family and friends live, and each time I return, I slip right back into its easy rhythm. I’ve spent multiple summers here, long before I could properly hold a conversation in Italian, and over time the town has become a second home.
Start your day the way the locals (and my family) do: at a neighborhood bar (cafe) where the barista knows everyone by name and regulars linger over espresso. With a cornetto in hand and the sound of the sea drifting in, you can watch the slow morning unfold as people greet each other like they’ve known one another forever… because they have.
From there, wander down to brick-lined streets dotted with news stands, beach shops, and gelato spots. Follonica doesn’t hinge on iconic landmarks; its charm is found in its people. Kids racing on bikes, grandparents strolling arm-in-arm, families setting up beach chairs on the sand. It’s a place where daily life feels warm, lived-in, and wonderfully human.
Just a short drive down the coast is Punta Ala, a completely different side of the Tuscan shoreline. Here, pine forests line quiet roads leading to elegant beaches and a marina full of sailboats. Punta Ala feels polished, serene, and calm, the perfect escape from Follonica’s lively summer energy. Spend an afternoon enjoying company and fresh pasta at a beachfront restaurant, reading under a beach umbrella, or wandering through the upscale harbor, and you’ll understand why people come here to unwind.
That contrast, the lively warmth of Follonica and the quiet refinement of Punta Ala, is what makes this corner of Tuscany so special. Together, they offer both a sense of home and a sense of retreat. Every time I return, I’m reminded why these places are so special: for the people, the coastline, the familiar rituals, and the open-hearted welcome that makes every visitor feel at home.
