Romania had been on my travel list for years. Between the legendary castles, medieval towns, and dramatic mountain scenery, it seemed like the perfect destination to explore with my dad during our trip through the Balkans.

With only a few days in the country, we wanted to maximize our time and avoid the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads, parking, and logistics. That's why we partnered with Book Tours Romania, a licensed Romanian tour operator with more than 10 years of experience creating private experiences throughout the country.

Their Full-Day Private Trip from Bucharest to Peles Castle, Bran Castle, and Brasov ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip.

A Warm Welcome to Romania

Our experience actually began before the tour itself.

After arriving in Bucharest, we were greeted at the airport by our guide, Chip, who would quickly become one of our favorite guides we've ever traveled with. From the moment we met him, his hospitality, professionalism, and knowledge were apparent.

Chip drove us to our hotel, the InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest, where we dropped our bags and freshened up before heading out to explore the city.

Instead of simply providing transportation, Chip spent the afternoon introducing us to Bucharest through a private walking tour. We visited several of the city's most notable landmarks, including Macca-Villacrosse Passage, the Central University Library, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Free Press Building, the CEC Palace headquarters, and Stavropoleos Church.

What stood out most was the context he provided. Beyond the architecture and landmarks, Chip shared fascinating insights into Romanian history, particularly the events surrounding the 1989 Revolution. By the end of the afternoon, we felt like we had a much deeper understanding of the country we were about to explore.

Before leaving us for the evening, he recommended dinner at Hanu' lui Manuc in Bucharest's Old Town. The restaurant featured traditional Romanian cuisine, live folk dancing, and one of the country's beloved desserts: a Romanian doughnut-style pastry that was every bit as delicious as promised.

After dinner, we headed back to the hotel to rest up for an early start the following morning.

An Early Start Pays Off

At 7:00 AM sharp, Chip picked us up from our hotel.

One thing we quickly learned is that traffic between Bucharest and the mountain regions can become extremely congested, especially during peak travel periods. Leaving early was one of the smartest decisions of the day.

As soon as we got into the car, it was clear that Book Tours Romania prioritizes comfort. Chip had stocked the vehicle with bottled water (both sparkling and still), soft drinks, and an impressive assortment of Romanian snacks ranging from crisps and chocolates to other local treats.

The vehicle was spotless, comfortable, climate-controlled, and equipped with charging ports. It may sound like a small detail, but having these amenities available during a full day of driving made a noticeable difference.

The journey into the Carpathian Mountains flew by.

Sinaia Monastery: A Peaceful Beginning

Our first stop was Sinaia Monastery, located in the mountain resort town of Sinaia.

Founded in 1695 by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino, the monastery remains an active Romanian Orthodox monastery today. Surrounded by the mountains and nestled among towering trees, it provided a peaceful and picturesque start to the day.

The monastery's history and architecture offered an excellent introduction to the cultural and religious heritage of Romania before we continued on to one of the country's most famous landmarks.

Peles Castle: Romania's Most Impressive Palace

If I had to choose one favorite from the entire day, it would probably be Peles Castle.

Located in Sinaia at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, Peles Castle looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. Built between 1873 and 1914 as the summer residence of King Carol I, the Neo-Renaissance palace reflects the German influences of Romania's first king.

Even from the outside, the castle is breathtaking.

While my dad and I explored the grounds and took photos, Chip kindly held our place in line for entry. Thanks to the early departure from Bucharest, we arrived before the large crowds and were able to enter relatively quickly.

Inside, the castle exceeded every expectation.

With more than 160 rooms, each space seemed more elaborate than the last. Ornate wood carvings, stained-glass ceilings, intricate detailing, and priceless collections filled every corner of the palace.

One of my favorite rooms housed an extraordinary collection of European and Asian weaponry displayed as historical artifacts. Another fascinating feature was the castle's retractable glass ceiling, which could be opened to reveal the night sky.

What made the experience particularly memorable was having Chip guide us through the palace. He pointed out hidden doors, architectural details, and historical stories that we almost certainly would have overlooked on our own.

Peles Castle isn't just beautiful... it's a masterpiece.

Exploring Medieval Brasov

After leaving Peles Castle, Chip gave us options for how we'd like to structure the rest of the day. One of the things I appreciated most about this tour was its flexibility. Rather than following a rigid schedule, he tailored the experience to our preferences.

We chose to visit Brasov before lunch.

Often considered one of Romania's most charming cities, Brasov feels like stepping into another era. Surrounded by mountains and filled with colorful historic buildings, the city's medieval character remains remarkably intact.

We strolled through Council Square, admired the famous Black Church, and visited several viewpoints overlooking the city. Chip also explained the city's Saxon heritage and pointed out architectural details we otherwise would have missed.

The Black Church, named after the damage caused by a major fire that blackened its exterior walls, is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and well worth seeing.

After exploring, we enjoyed lunch in the city center. Chip provided several recommendations but allowed us to choose whatever appealed to us most. That balance between guidance and flexibility was a recurring theme throughout the day.

Bran Castle and the Truth Behind Dracula

No trip through Transylvania would be complete without visiting Bran Castle.

Often marketed as Dracula's Castle, Bran Castle's connection to the fictional vampire is actually much weaker than many visitors expect.

Originally built in the late 14th century as a defensive fortress, the castle later became a royal residence and was transformed into a summer retreat by Queen Marie of Romania in the early twentieth century.

While the castle has little direct connection to Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure who inspired parts of Bram Stoker's Dracula, it was easy to see why visitors made the association. Its dramatic hilltop location, imposing towers, and Gothic appearance certainly fit the image.

As we explored the castle, Chip helped separate fact from fiction, explaining the history of Vlad the Impaler and how stories about his brutal tactics spread throughout Europe. These accounts eventually contributed to the inspiration behind one of literature's most famous characters.

Learning the real history behind the legend was far more interesting than the myths themselves.

After touring the castle, we spent some time browsing the local shops for souvenirs before beginning the journey back to Bucharest.

Why a Private Tour Makes All the Difference

The drive back to Bucharest took longer due to evening traffic, but by that point we didn't mind. Plus, the mountainous views were stunning.

The day had been packed with incredible scenery, fascinating history, and memorable

experiences. During the drive, Chip continued sharing recommendations for the remainder of our stay, including a suggestion to visit Therme Bucharest, one of Europe's largest wellness and spa complexes.

We ended up taking his advice the following day, and we're glad we did.

Looking back, what made this experience special wasn't just the destinations themselves. Romania's castles, monasteries, and medieval towns are undeniably beautiful, but having an exceptional guide elevated the experience considerably.

Chip's knowledge, flexibility, hospitality, and genuine enthusiasm transformed what could have been a standard sightseeing tour into something far more personal and memorable.

For travelers seeking a seamless way to experience some of Romania's most iconic attractions without worrying about transportation, navigation, tickets, or logistics, I highly recommend Book Tours Romania.

From airport pickup to personalized recommendations and expertly guided touring, every detail was thoughtfully handled.

If you're planning a trip to Romania and want to experience the country's highlights in comfort, this tour is an excellent place to start.
