10 Trips to Take Right After You Retire
(If I weren’t 24 and just getting started… here’s exactly how I’d celebrate retirement)
There’s something special about retirement. It’s not just the end of a career, it’s the beginning of complete freedom. No PTO limits, no rushed long weekends, no squeezing trips into tight schedules. Just time to travel the way you’ve always wanted to.
If I were stepping into that season of life, these are the 10 trips I’d take right away. Not someday. Not “maybe next year.” Immediately.
A Slow Italian Summer:
One of my first trips to kickstart this new stage in my life would be an Italian summer. I would plan a long, unhurried vacation across Italy, giving myself the time to truly experience each destination. I would drink Italian wines straight from the vineyards in Tuscany and eat fresh pasta on a rooftop balcony overlooking the Amalfi Coast. I would enjoy an affogato at a local cafe in the heart of Rome and explore historic landmarks filled with rich art, including museums that house masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David.
I would take a gondola ride through the canals of Venice and spend my days shopping and wandering through the streets of Milan. I would hike the stunning, rugged peaks of the Dolomites and take in the natural beauty that feels completely different from the cities. I would end my nights with tiramisu or gelato, or better yet, both. Even with an entire summer dedicated to Italy, it still would not feel like enough time, and I would seriously consider extending my stay.
African Safari Adventure:
This is one of those once in a lifetime trips that deserves your full attention. I would travel to Kenya, Tanzania, or Botswana to experience an African safari and see the Big Five up close in their natural habitat. I would spend my days spotting lions, elephants, and other wildlife, and my evenings surrounded by the sounds of nature as the sun sets over the landscape. I would enjoy a traditional sundowner at a scenic viewpoint and take in the quiet beauty of the environment. I would take a hot air balloon safari to see the landscape from above, offering a completely different perspective from the game drives. I would consider taking a short trip to Victoria Falls to experience one of the natural wonders of the world.
I would spend my downtime reading, exploring local artisan markets, and fully disconnecting from the pace of everyday life. I would end my nights stargazing under clear skies, far away from the lights of any city. It would be a perfect balance of adventure, stillness, and appreciation for the natural world.
Greek Island Hopping:
One of the first things I would prioritize after retiring is slowing life down, and there is no better place to do that than the Greek islands. I would spend weeks hopping from island to island with no strict schedule, simply going wherever feels right. I would swim in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea and spend long afternoons under the sun in places like Santorini and Paros.
I would enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront tavernas, paired with a crisp glass of wine as the sun sets over the whitewashed buildings. I would wander through charming streets, discovering hidden cafes and local shops. I would take in the peaceful rhythm of island life, where time moves slower and every moment feels intentional.
A National Parks Road Trip:
With no time constraints, I would set out on a road trip through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States. I would drive through the American West, making stops at iconic parks like Zion, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton. I would wake up early to catch the sunrise over the mountains and spend my days hiking scenic trails at my own pace.
I would take in the quiet beauty of nature, far removed from the noise of everyday life. I would stop whenever something catches my eye, whether it is a hidden viewpoint, a small town, or a scenic overlook. I would end my days by a campfire or in a cozy lodge, reflecting on the freedom that comes with traveling without a schedule.
Japan in Cherry Blossom Season:
This is a trip I would plan carefully, taking full advantage of the flexibility retirement allows. I would time my visit perfectly to experience cherry blossom season at its peak. I would walk through parks in Tokyo and Kyoto surrounded by blooming sakura trees, taking in one of the most beautiful natural displays in the world.
I would immerse myself in the culture by visiting temples, exploring traditional neighborhoods, and enjoying authentic Japanese cuisine. I would take quiet moments to appreciate the balance between modern city life and deep rooted tradition. I would ride the bullet train between cities and enjoy the journey just as much as the destinations. Every moment would feel intentional and unforgettable.
Luxury Train Through Europe:
At this stage in life, I would want to experience travel in a slower and more refined way. A luxury train journey through Europe would be exactly that. I would sit back and take in the passing scenery as I travel through countries like Switzerland, France, and Italy.
I would enjoy beautifully prepared meals, comfortable accommodations, and the elegance that comes with this style of travel. The journey itself would become just as meaningful as the destinations. It would be a reminder that sometimes the best way to see the world is to slow down and enjoy every moment along the way.
Southeast Asia Escape:
With the freedom to stay as long as I want, I would head to Southeast Asia for an extended escape. I would spend time in Thailand, Vietnam, and Bali, experiencing a mix of relaxation and adventure. I would explore vibrant markets, visit ancient temples, and try incredible street food.
I would relax on beautiful beaches, listening to the sound of the ocean with nowhere to rush off to. I would take part in cultural experiences such as cooking classes and local tours. I would balance my days between exploring and simply enjoying the slower pace of life, where every day feels full and unhurried.
Patagonia Expedition:
For a more adventurous chapter, I would travel to Patagonia, where nature feels raw and untouched. I would hike through dramatic landscapes filled with glaciers, mountains, and open wilderness. I would take my time on the trails, stopping often to take in the views and appreciate the scale of it all.
I would disconnect from everything and fully immerse myself in the experience. I would embrace the challenge of the hikes, knowing the reward is some of the most incredible scenery in the world. It would be a reminder of how vast and beautiful the planet truly is.
Australian & New Zealand Adventure:
This is a trip I would go all in on. With the time that retirement allows, I would explore both Australia and New Zealand without feeling rushed. I would start in Sydney, taking in the iconic harbor and beaches, then make my way to the Great Barrier Reef to experience one of the most incredible natural wonders in the world.
From there, I would head to New Zealand, where the landscapes feel almost unreal. I would explore the mountains, fjords, and rolling green hills that make the country so unique. I would take scenic drives, stop at small towns, and spend time outdoors hiking and exploring. It would be a perfect mix of adventure and appreciation for nature at its finest.
A Dream “No-Plan” Trip:
After planning and experiencing so many incredible trips, I would leave room for one more kind of adventure. I would book a one way flight somewhere I have always been curious about and figure the rest out as I go. Maybe I would even throw a dart at a map and see where it lands.
I would travel with no detailed itinerary and no strict plans, just complete freedom. I would follow recommendations from locals, stay longer in places I love, and move on when I feel ready. It would bring back the excitement of discovery and remind me why I fell in love with travel in the first place.
Travel takes on a completely different meaning when you are no longer working around a schedule. These trips are not about rushing through destinations or checking places off a list. They are about being present, moving at your own pace, and fully experiencing everything each place has to offer. If I were stepping into retirement today, this is exactly how I would begin this next chapter of life. But for now, I am just getting started. See you at these destinations in 50 or so years.
